Kathy Lynskey is one of the few Marlborough wine producers to have actually grown up in the province. Her early years were spent on a Marlborough sheep farm and with an interest in wine and horticulture, she returned to the province and purchased her first vineyard in 1989. In 1997, she decided to produce wine under her own label. Kathy sold her original vineyard and purchased a bare site ideally situated in the heart of Marlborough.

Kathy Lynskey Wines’ own estate nine hectare vineyard is situated on old riverbed soils of the Omaka River. Its well-drained stone and silt loams are ideally suited for the production of premium quality varietal wines now released under her label. The site is planted mainly with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir grapes with lesser amounts of Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, and Merlot. Varietal clones have been selected with care and attention to producing the best flavors possible from each variety.
This attention to detail extends to vineyard management, where the vines are cropped at levels which maximizes the intense fruit flavors for which Marlborough wines have become world-famous. In consultation with the winemaker, Kathy takes an active role in determining the wine styles produced and is instrumental in selecting the various types of French oak barrels each year for fermentation of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Merlot. Since her first release of Sauvignon Blanc in 1998, Kathy Lynskey Wines have achieved excellent recognition within New Zealand, Australia, and the United States, winning awards in several major wine competitions and receiving numerous accolades from wine writers in all three countries. Kathy’s goal is to continue producing consistent, top quality wines with the elegant fruit flavors typical of the Marlborough region.
