Richard Mendelson – a Napa Valley attorney and aspiring artist – and his wife Marilyn met in Burgundy France in 1977 and have lived around vineyards and wine ever since. While on a trip to Yalta and touring the famed cellars of Massandra, they discovered the hidden treasure of a unique Crimean dessert wine loved by the Russian Czars. They returned home to Napa inspired to create a line of hand-crafted wines from their own vineyards. Their first Pinot Gris dessert wine was released in 1996, which received a spectacular 95 points from the Wine Spectator. The Mendelson Dessert wines are noted for their elegance and balance. Consistently awarded 91 points and above by the Wine Spectator, the Mendelson wines ‘Transcend dessert.” The Mendelson Dessert wines are handcrafted gems produced in small lots in Napa, California from the finest California vineyards. Select bunches of late harvest grapes are hand-picked in late fall each year, fermented in small oak barrels then lightly fortified with the finest alembic pot-distilled brandy.

Richard’s training in Burgundy at Bouchard Aine et Fils, was the inspiration for another wine to be added to the Mendelson portfolio. In 2001, they acquired old-vine Pinot Noir fruit from Sleepy Hollow Vineyard and made their first Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir.Mendelson wines are hand-crafted in small lots. The goal is to produce ultra-premium wines that reflect the terroir where the grapes are grown. Richard, an artist as well as a vintner, creates the original artwork that adorns each bottle of Mendelson wine.
