Obesity as a Major Health Problem in the U.S
- Issue or Problem to Address
The main issue that I will address is the health and social-economical problem of obesity in the U.S. While many industrialized nations experience obesity cases, obesity rates in the U.S. are of concern because it is the highest in the world. It is a major health issue since it results in high risk of having health problems such as cancer, coronary artery disease, and stroke (Williams et al., 2015). In addition, the cost of living for obese people is high because they require more finances to support their life than normal people
The public, policy makers, government, and restaurant industries are the key stakeholders who have an interest in addressing the problem. The administration will provide the necessary tools to use in campaigns to teach people about importance of eating healthy food. The restaurant industries will help in the fight against this problem since they can prepare healthy foods such as whole grains.
- Nature and Urgency of the Obesity Issue
Excess body weight is not only a problem for the high-income nations such as the U.S and United Kingdom, but also developing nations. Indeed, it has become a major issue of concern in low and middle-income countries; China has recorded an increasing rate every year (Djalalinia, Qorbani, Peykari, & Kelishadi, 2015). People need to address it with urgency since it cause other severe diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, as well as some cancers.
- Policy Options/Courses of Action Available for Addressing Obesity
School nutrition policies can help to address the issue of obesity since most schools lack a well-evaluated diet program (Rhee et al., 2018). Alternatively, the government can deliver a range of initiatives across the state such as those concerned with promotion of physical activity among schoolchildren.
- Preferred Policy Solution/Course of Action for Addressing Obesity
The best policy solution that I would recommend for addressing obesity is school nutrition programs. Since childhood obesity cases and related chronic diseases are increasing, promotion of healthy eating would eliminate the problem from the early stage (Dooyema et al., 2018). Moreover, the government can support regular physical activity in schools to eliminate cases of children growing to adulthood while suffering from obesity.
